The Power of Having Less Targets

I have a site which is doing pretty well in generating a nice three-figure income passively from Google Adsense every month and I never thought in the past that I can improve it further by tweaking the ads. It is until recently that I have decided to test the limits after seeing Google’s optimization techniques videos that I have shared.

I guess having a secure job will somehow take away your motivation to maximize your web site’s potential. This is one of the lessons that I would like to share in this post.

Why not only set one target?

Setting a target becomes more effective when you only have few.. or one.

In the past, I tend to set targets for almost everything I do. When it comes to my Internet Business, there are simply countless of targets that I want to achieve. Like securing a permanent advertising partnership with a big advertiser, create another portal for my next-big-thing idea and generating more income (with specific targets) for every of my sites.

It is no surprise that I did not meet the overwhelming amount of targets that I have created for myself when I was fully committed to my full-time job. It is until the beginning of this month that I started to use target setting only for the top 20% of my activities. I become more focused since there are lesser targets and it is easy for me to concentrate and give more attention to each one.

The maximum we think only exist in our mind

My target list shrinks and one of my target is to increase the revenue of one of my site by 50%. This site, as I have mentioned before, has already reached the maximum potential of income generated in my mind for the past two years.

I go ahead and test out several different ad formats on one of my lesser performing placement and really stunned at the results! The better performing ad format gives me a boost of close to 100% of the Adsense income :D What I did was that I replace the 468 x 60 pixels of my ads with a 336 x 280 pixels ads which in my opinion, does not blend well to my content as compared to the one before.

I believe the most important element here is testing and trying out. A lot of Internet Entrepreneurs nowadays have full-time jobs themselves and they fail to generate a full-time income from Internet simply because they still have choice. It is until they treat their online business as the sole business, then they will see the difference.

Just a small suggestion that could make your life better

Why not try to set only one target for your Internet Business and try to achieve it by the end of the next 30 days? If you do not have an Internet Business but is interested in having one, why not set a target to learn more about it (development, monetization model, marketing etc) and equipped yourself with the knowledge rather than waiting to meet someone to collaborate?

I like to hear from you if you have benefited by setting less targets :)
