Link bait is definitely the most powerful way to build incoming links. Matt Cutts, from Google, has also blogged about link bait some time ago. Link bait is not easy, but it is rewarding. One great recent example is the review campaign by John Chow. Looks like its time now to sit down and think about how can we attract links to our sites.

This has been mentioned by popular bloggers like John Chow and Yaro Starak. Basically, the concept is that we must be generous enough to link to the others as long as they have valuable content for our readers or site users. People will link back to us eventually if we consistently provide useful content
Writing articles is still one of the best ways to build links - For FREE
Writing articles do help us in SERP. In addition, it also brings us some traffic if you have submitted the article to popular article directories such as eZineArticles.com. Links from the articles are nature especially if they are embedded in your content.
PageRank is not as important as SERP
To conclude, Webmasters should not focus on PageRank. We should look at a bigger picture - the traffic. With a good search engine ranking, we can go ahead to monetize our sites using tons of methods (banner advertisement, affiliate products etc).
