How to Promote Your New Site without Budget
Promoting a new site or service without budget often requires more time as we have to do most of the ground work ourselves. The following are some of the promotion and marketing strategies that I have used for my sites, you may not find all of the ideas useful but most of them will help to boost up your site’s presence:
- Participate in online discussion for your niche
This is the most effective strategy in my opinion. To achieve the best promotion results, we will have to be an expert in our field(s). By offering relevant suggestions to the others and help them along the way, we are building our reputation and people will find out more about our products or services. To illustrate an example, I have been helping the forum members at DigitalPoint regarding Search Engine Optimization and my SEO site continues to receive a good amount of traffic from DP everyday.
- Write and submit Articles
This is another great way to attract traffic to your site. Writing an article is not that difficult if you have clear concept and points to illustrate. In addition, the backlinks in the articles are considered relevant by the Search Engine Bots, meaning that they will contribute to the SERP (Search Engine Result Page). Most authors tend to submit their articles to hundreds of article directories but this is a very tedious task especially if we are doing this manually. There is no need to submit to so many directories as most of them will not be crawled by the way. In my experience, submitting to only the top article directories will be sufficient. I will be posting a list of useful article directories soon but in case you want to start off now, you may want to try out eZineArticles.
- Join the Social Bookmarking Sites Crowd
There has been quite a BUZZ recently on all these sites. Places like del.icio.us, blinklist, wists and furl allows the sharing of common bookmarks by the users. If your site managed to appear in most of the bookmarks, the traffic directed to your site will be tremendous (for a short period of time). Using this service, many webmasters have boosted their traffic overnight by exchanging bookmarks (an example of bookmarking craze ^^).
- Submit Press Release
Submitting a press release will get us into Google News which will bring us highly targeted traffic. Submitting the press release to PR.com is adequate to be listed in the Google News. You may want to refer to my recent press release article for reference 
- Link Bait
All the above suggestions will get us short or mid term traffic but it will always depend on our site’s content to maintain a continuous stream of traffic and income. Link Bait is the term used in the Webmasters’ context which mean that how to make our visitors link back to our sites. Providing useful tools / utilities is one excellent way in achieving link bait.
There are still other methods for promoting a new site like link exchange, forum signatures and email marketing etc. Try to experience and improve on these strategies to make the most out from them. Do keep me informed if you have something interesting to share
